8/2/2023 0 Comments Biff cane in movieThis is an issue with me because I find it out of character with the Biff from the first Back to the Future, despite his mean character in the movie I find it hard to believe that Biff is someone capable of murder. The problems with this begin when we find out that Biff has murdered George McFly to marry Lorraine. This is one of my favourite parts of the film as the designs for this alternate 1985 is interesting to see after being so familiar with the good 1985. This gets more bananas as later in the film Marty and Doc return to an alternate 1985 where Biff is rich and powerful and in control of Hill Valley turning the entire thing into a corrupt gambling estate. Although the 1955 version of Biff is the most memorable version of him and it was a delight to see him being acted out but older (fist cane and all) I couldn’t help but feel this change of character was necessary to fuel the plot but the writers didn’t really know how to make it happen. This change in character is not really explained at all. In Back to the Future II however Biff in 2015 is acting like the 1955 Biff who’s mean and aggressive not the Biff from 1985 who was weak and cowardly. This explains in the ending of Back to the Future when George stands up to him his masculinity is tested and Biff’s tough persona falls apart leading to the Biff we have in 1985. Biff was tall and athletic and mostly tall (his height is constantly referenced) the only people he’s seen to pick on are people smaller than him who’d be too intimidated to fight back. this provides an implication to how Biff was naturally just a rather weak character, perhaps I’m reading to much into this, but it seems that Biff was a bully who was never used to having his authority challenged. In the first film Biff Tannen was an antagonist bully character who after being stood up to (by George McFly in 1955) becomes a more submissive cowardly character in 1985. One of the problems with the film is with the characterization of Biff Tannen. In this quick little blog, I’m gonna explain the problems I have with Back to the Future II in the hopes of letting people know why at this point in life I would actually place it below Part III in my opinion. Back to the Future II was my favourite of the trilogy (I would’ve ordered them 2, then 1 and lastly 3) it was the most interesting out of them with it’s great vision of the future being interesting to look at and provide a great look into the future for the characters of Marty, Jennifer and even Biff for that matter.Īs an Adult however I see the films in a slightly different light and it’s problems as a movie which were previously hidden rise somewhat to the surface and has since ruined it’s placement as my favourite in the trilogy. To say I was a fan would’ve been an understatement. ![]() You read that right, don’t worry this isn’t a Buzzfeed Article.Īs a child when I was growing up I would watch the Back to the Future movies on loop over and over.
